December 21st - Let's go for a walk!

Hildy here *wave*
A few weeks ago I broke my toe . . .
Yesterday I got to go on my first little walk!
YAY my toe is feeling better!

Today, we went on a longer walk!! 

It was 47 degrees today, so I wore my new sweater.
It was too big on me and when I rolled in the grass
my sweater came off - ha ha ha

Ahh, back to my stinky stomping grounds!

"Hildy - we need to go home now"

But there are birds in here to chase!

"We'll go to the mailbox later OK?"

OK . . . I guess I'll go take a nap . . .

December 15th - The new ramp!

Dad made it, Mom carpeted it,
I love it!

Dang it Gracie!  That's not for you!

You get down here right this minute!!

Attack!!!!

Dang, mom says I have to share . . .

Harumph!

December 15th - My paw update . . .

Hi friends!
My paw is still swollen, but not as much.
To keep from jumping around, Mom and Dad take
turns keeping me on their laps.
In the morning I take my pain pill and
 it makes me sleepy until the afternoon then
I get all fidgity and miss my walks and adventures.

Friday I see Dr. Martello for more x-rays.

In the mean time I'm just hanging out.

(Mom gives me treats cuz she feels sorry for me - hee hee)

 

December 13th - Hildy wants to know . . .

What is your favorite Christmas song?
I haven't decided yet . . . 

December 12th - Hildy broke her toe! - *sad*

In Hildy's words:

So, I tumbled off the couch with excitement
cuz we were gonna go on a WALK . . .

Ker-thump - OUCH!

Off to the vet we went . . .

We only had to wait a few minutes before Cory took me
back to see Dr. Martello.

OUCH!  That's the spot!

Dr. Martello wanted to see my limp . . .

I had to wait a while for my X-ray results . . .

So, I am on an anti-inflammatory and pain killers,
and bed-rest for 3 weeks (!)

WHAT??  Three weeks without adventures????
NOoooooooo!

Not the same, but better than nothing.
*Heavy sigh*

 

December 12th - Hildy's foot update . . .

Yesterday Glenn (Dad) said "wanna go for a walk?"
Hildy got  so excited she fell off the couch and turned her ankle!

OUCH!!!

She has been resting a lot, but this morning her
paw is a little swollen . . .

We are taking her to the vet at 11 o'clock

December 6th - Driving south . . .

Whew, I am still getting over
meeting Santa Claus yesterday!

Today we went 80 miles south to
Eureka to go shopping.

We pulled over to see the pretty view at
False Klamath Cove

We stopped at the Redwood National Park Visitor's Center,
Orick, CA (Oreq~w  is the original village site)

Dad wanted to check out the agates at
the beach behind Dry Lagoon

I love the beach,
I could stay here all day!

December 5th - Big foot! . . . wait . . . what?

Hello Friends, Hildy here . . . 

Mom, Dad and I went for a hike today in Stout Grove, CA.
Mom said there was a Bigfoot sighting there!

I'm getting dizzy these trees are so tall
No more looking up!

Were getting close!  The scent is really strong!

We found him! We found him! 
It's BIGFOOT!!!

Wait a minute, that's not Bigfoot!

It's Santa Claus!
What is Santa doing in the forest?

It is Santa!

He said his workshop was across the river and
he was just taking a walk getting some "me" time . . .

 He also said I was a good girl and he would
leave me some presents on Christmas morning!

Yippee!

Watch out Bigfoot, were still hunting!

This was the craziest thing we have ever encountered.
It was not planned, Santa was really
walking in the woods!!!
Glenn and I were beside ourselves,
when we got close to Santa, he said HO HO HO,
we asked him what he was doing in the woods.
Hildy was not sure what to make of Santa,
he was so tall that she was sure that it was Bigfoot
dressed in a Santa outfit.

"well if that don't beat all!"
 

November 22nd - Human foods that poison dogs!

Human Foods That Poison Pets

• Avocado: All parts are toxic to dogs
• Chocolate: Contains Theobromine, a cardiac stimulant which can be fatal to dogs
• Fruit Pits and Seeds: Most contain cyanide
• Garlic: Contains Thiosulphate, though a small amount, so a lot would have to be ingested to be toxic. Keep in mind, it builds up in the system
• Grapes: Affects a dog's kidneys
• Macadamia Nuts: Affects the nervous system
• Mushrooms: Affect the nervous system, kidneys and heart
• Nutmeg: Can cause seizures and central nervous system damage
• Onions: Contains same toxin as garlic, though in much larger amounts
• Raisins: Same as grapes
• Sugar-Free Foods: These contain Xylitol, which can cause liver failure in dogs
• Tomatoes, Potatoes and Rhubarb: Parts of these contain oxalates, which can be toxic to dogs

Holiday Hazards For Dogs

The holidays are a very hectic time for dogs and dog owners alike and it's easy to miss some of the plants and foods poisonous to dogs specific to that time.

• Thanksgiving: Trim that turkey well and keep the gravy for the humans. Too much fat intake, especially over a short period of time, can be toxic.
  
• Christmas: Many of the plants used for Christmas decorating are toxic to dogs, including Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias. It's best to find safe substitutes.
• Easter: Lilies are highly toxic to dogs, as are Tulips.
• Fourth of July: Alcohol can be toxic to dogs so during your BBQs, do keep the beer to yourself.
• Halloween: We all know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs but excessive sugar from any source can be as well.

General Signs Of Poisoning

Though there can be signs that are specific to each toxin, the most common are:

• Abdominal Pain (your dog may whine and his stomach will be tender to the touch)
• Coma
• Convulsions
• Diarrhea
• Drooling
• Irregular Heartbeat
• Labored Breathing
• Lethargy
• Swollen Limbs
• Vomiting

Immediate Treatment of a Poisoned Pet

If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms or even if you just suspect he ingested something toxic, call a pet poison hot line such as the ASPCA (1-888-426-4435) or the Pet Poison Hot Line (1-800-213-6180). Your local ASPCA might also have a hot line.

If possible, have someone simultaneously call your vet or the emergency vet. They can tell you what to do immediately and prepare for your immediate arrival.

There are home remedies out there such as charcoal and sodium sulfate but it is best to get professional advice before administering these.
